A growing number of national advocacy groups are sounding the alarm. Access to everyday technology is becoming one of the most important and most overlooked equity issues facing individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Organizations like YAI have emphasized that modern, off the shelf devices such as smartphones, tablets, home automation tools, and adaptive accessories are no longer luxuries. For many individuals with IDD, these tools support communication, independence, safety, education, and community participation. Yet access continues to lag far behind need.
Recent analysis highlighted a stark gap. Fewer than 3 percent of individuals with IDD are projected to receive formal assistive technology services, even though evidence consistently shows that these tools improve quality of life and reduce isolation.
Advocates are now making the case that access to internet and enabling technologies should be treated as essential utilities. AAIDD notes that connectivity is as fundamental as heat or electricity because it enables daily life, service access, and connection to support networks. Without policy and funding structures that reflect this, many individuals remain excluded from tools that could change their lives.
At the same time, rapid innovation across the tech sector is reshaping what is possible. Advances in AI, edge computing, robotics, and device design are accelerating the development of assistive tools. These trends could make next generation technologies more intuitive, more adaptive, and more affordable for individuals with IDD.
For the IDD community, the message is clear. Technology access is essential. As innovation accelerates, ensuring equitable access will be key to helping individuals build independence, safety, and everyday quality of life.
