Washington to broaden remote caregiving in 2026

Dec 8, 2025

Washington State is set to expand its remote caregiving options for home-based care beginning January 1, 2026. The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) currently operates a pilot program through Catholic Community Services that offers remote caregiving via a secure technology platform. This initiative includes services such as medication reminders, wellness check-ins, behavioral support, and assistance with daily routines that do not require physical presence.

Pilot program paves way for wider access

The pilot will conclude at the end of 2025, after which licensed and contracted home-care agencies statewide may opt to provide remote caregiving, subject to meeting established security and program criteria. The adoption will be voluntary, suggesting availability could differ across regions and providers. This phased approach allows DSHS to monitor compliance and technological standards before scaling the model.

Implications for clients and providers

Remote caregiving offers greater flexibility, particularly benefiting clients in rural locations and those seeking discreet support between in-person visits. For agencies, the expansion represents both an opportunity and a responsibility to integrate technology-driven care while maintaining regulatory compliance. Providers will need to ensure data security and meet operational requirements to qualify for remote service delivery.

The program’s launch signals a shift toward leveraging technology to enhance home-based support for populations served under Washington’s long-term care systems. It also aligns with broader trends in Medicaid and IDD service delivery emphasizing accessibility, continuity, and innovative care models.
